Nicotinic Acid for Hair

Нікотинова кислота для волосся

Nicotinic acid, niacin, and vitamin PP—these are all synonyms for the same substance. Nicotinic acid has been known in trichology for quite some time, but it has only recently become popular among specialists and everyday consumers. And for good reason. The beauty and health of hair depend heavily on the environment, but in today’s world, it’s difficult to keep it in perfect condition. Split ends, excessive hair loss, coarseness, and dryness are the main problems every woman faces. Hair loss is a pressing issue, and not just among women. That’s why nicotinic acid is simply essential for hair care when it comes to natural and affordable solutions.

How does nicotinic acid work?

Niacin causes blood vessels in the skin to dilate. This results in a strong rush of blood to the hair follicles. Consequently, the hair bulbs receive more nutrients, which stimulates their development and growth, and the hair grows faster (studies show that hair length increases by an average of 3–4 cm per month). In addition, nicotinic acid influences the production of melanin, the pigment that gives our hair its color. As a result, niacin helps prevent premature graying, and, as practice shows, even existing gray hair in many users begins to regain its pigment over time.

In addition, the function of the sebaceous glands—which are also located in the hair follicles—improves. As a result, normal sebum production in the scalp is restored, dandruff disappears, and the overall condition of the hair improves.

When should nicotinic acid be used?

Niacin, as the main active ingredient, is found in many medical and cosmetic products designed to combat hair loss. Furthermore, this substance has been successfully used to treat alopecia in both men and women. Products containing nicotinic acid are ideal for combating seasonal hair loss and preventing such problems.

Possible side effects

Depending on the individual characteristics of the skin and the body as a whole, nicotinic acid—like any cosmetic product—may cause certain side effects. In rare cases, an allergic reaction to this substance may occur, so you should perform an allergy test before use: apply a small amount of the product to the inside of your elbow. If a rash appears within 30 minutes, it is not recommended to use the product.

It is worth noting that skin redness after applying products containing nicotinic acid is a normal reaction. This occurs as a result of increased blood flow in the area of application and usually subsides within 1–2 hours. The skin adapts to niacin fairly quickly, and after just a few days, this reaction will be less pronounced or even unnoticeable.

Nicotinic Acid and Minoxidil

Niacin and minoxidil have a somewhat similar mechanism of action, namely, they dilate the blood vessels in the skin. The combination of these substances in a single product has a stronger effect compared to classic minoxidil lotions.

Although Minoxidil is the most effective treatment for hair loss, in many cases the following also prove highly effective: lotions in which nicotinic acid is the main active ingredient.

It’s important to remember that the appearance of your hair and skin reflects the overall health of your body. And very often, it’s difficult to achieve the desired results without changing your lifestyle, diet, and habits.
