Hair Loss Caused by Minoxidil

Випадіння волосся від міноксидилу

One of the unpleasant side effects that some users of minoxidil products may experience is partial hair loss during the initial stage of use (usually the first month, or less commonly, up to two months). And although this is generally the exception rather than the rule, such a phenomenon can occur.

It’s only natural to ask: Why is that? After all, minoxidil is supposed to combat hair loss, not cause it. Let’s try to figure this out in this article.

Why does Minoxidil cause hair loss?

In the initial stages of use, minoxidil can indeed cause excessive hair loss. This phenomenon is, of course, unpleasant, but it is not a medical condition. This fact indicates that minoxidil directly affects the hair follicles. As a result, hair that is in the telogen (resting) phase may fall out, and the follicle transitions to the anagen (active growth) phase.

It’s also important to understand that in the case of hopelessly weakened hair—which cannot grow normally due to structural damage—there is no other option but to simply remove it so that new, strong, and healthy hair can grow in its place. After all, the number of hair follicles is limited. And the fact that some hair is lost at the beginning of minoxidil treatment simply means that new hair is starting to grow.

New hair growth isn't noticeable right away, since the root (follicle) is located up to 2.5 mm deep in the skin. It takes several days—or even weeks—to see new “shoots” where hair has been lost.

But don't panic

Although experiencing hair loss in the early stages of using minoxidil isn't very pleasant—and can sometimes even be frightening—there's no need to panic.

First, this phenomenon does not affect the overall condition of the hair. Only those who use minoxidil notice it. Second, hair loss resulting from the use of these products indicates that they are working and that the hair regrowth process has begun, and that metabolic processes and nutrient supply have been stimulated. All of this is a normal effect of minoxidil and should not be a cause for concern.

How long does hair loss last?

The duration of this process depends on many factors and the individual characteristics of each person. This phase typically lasts 1–3 weeks, though sometimes longer. It all depends on the condition of the hair, the degree to which it has weakened, and the number of weak hairs. It is strongly discouraged to stop using minoxidil at this stage. It is important to understand that this phenomenon is temporary and will be followed by a phase of active hair growth.
