You start using minoxidil, and a logical question arises: How long do you need to use it to achieve the desired results?
It’s worth noting right away that it’s very difficult to make an accurate prediction to answer this question, since there are many factors at play. However, we can provide some average statistics that will help you understand this topic.
What affects hair growth?
To determine whether minoxidil will be effective in your specific case and how long it will take to achieve the results you’re hoping for, you need to identify the key factors that influence normal hair growth:
- heredity – perhaps the most important characteristic. For example: people from the Caucasus, Arabs, Jews, and some other ethnic groups naturally have thick hair, and it’s normal for boys aged 15–16 to start growing a beard actively. In contrast, people in Asia experience the exact opposite: sparse hair, sparse beards, or a complete lack of beards among most men;

- the body's hormonal balance – is also one of the most important factors. In some ways, this point is similar to the first one, but in this case, you can partially influence the levels of certain hormones;
- presence or absence of diseases – especially those related to the thyroid gland;
- medication intake – including hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and long-term use of strong antibiotics;
- lifestyle – an important factor that is sometimes simply overlooked. A healthy diet, exercise and avoiding harmful habits – all of these have an impact on the condition of your hair, if not directly, then indirectly.
Of course, this list is not exhaustive, but these are the most important factors that cannot be ignored when it comes to growing a healthy head of hair.
How long should a course of minoxidil last?
As we mentioned at the beginning, there are no exact time frames due to the unique characteristics of each individual’s body. However, there are recommended time frames that can serve as a starting point.
Minoxidil from some world-renowned brands is sold only in boxes of 6 bottles. It’s the resellers who buy these boxes who then sell the product individually. And that makes sense, since not everyone has the means or the desire to buy such a large quantity at once. This is especially true given the realities in Ukraine, where most people are focused on saving money so they can afford food.
However, 6 bottles, or 6 months of use, is the recommended minimum duration. Such a long period of use ensures that results will be achieved and will last after cancellation of the product. However, this timeframe is only a guideline. The duration of the treatment should be determined on an individual basis, because for some people, even a year or more may not be enough to achieve the desired results, while others use minoxidil for 2–3 months and already have a magnificent beard.
Another important factor is where exactly minoxidil is applied. In theory, it doesn’t matter where you regrow hair (of course, we’re talking about the parts of the body where it can grow naturally), but in practice, the higher the density of hair follicles, the better the results. Accordingly, on the scalp (in the absence of androgenetic alopecia), the duration of treatment is generally shorter than on the beard.
It’s important to understand that quality doesn’t happen overnight. We want it all at once: to invest as little time as possible and get the maximum results. But that’s not how it works. This principle applies to minoxidil as well. Be patient and persistent, use the products correctly and consistently, and you’ll achieve the results you’ve been dreaming of.
